The honest geography first
Hacienda Pinilla is on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste. Arenal and Monteverde, the two destinations most tourists want to combine with a beach stay, are 4 to 5 hours away by car. That distance matters. A day trip to Arenal from Hacienda Pinilla means 8 to 10 hours of driving for 2 to 3 hours at the destination. That is not a day trip. That is an exhausting endurance test.
Rincon de la Vieja is different. It is 2 hours away, entirely doable as a day excursion, and offers volcanic hot springs, waterfalls, wildlife, and adventure activities that rival Arenal in some categories. For a group that wants a volcano day from the beach, Rincon de la Vieja is the honest recommendation. Stay in Tamarindo's day trip guide covers the best excursions from the Guanacaste coast in detail.
Rincon de la Vieja: the right volcano day trip
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is approximately 2 hours from Hacienda Pinilla. The park sits around an active volcano and features bubbling mud pots, boiling hot springs (for viewing, not swimming), steaming volcanic vents, a 82-foot waterfall you can swim beneath, and wildlife-rich trails along the Colorado River. The concierge can arrange organized day tours that combine hiking, canopy, hot springs, and mud therapy at nearby adventure centers. Hacienda Guachipelin and Buena Vista del Rincon are two well-regarded operators in the area.
Leave early, around 6am, to arrive by 8am when the park is coolest and least crowded. A full day at Rincon de la Vieja with the drive both ways is a 12 to 13-hour day. It is worth it. Most groups who do it describe it as the non-beach highlight of the week.
What about Arenal?
Arenal is genuinely spectacular. The cone-shaped volcano, the hot springs fed by geothermal activity, the hanging bridges and forest trails, the night view of lava glow in active periods, are all worth the trip. The honest answer is that Arenal deserves at least one overnight to do it properly. If your group is already committing to a week at Casa Bonita Beach, adding a 2-night Arenal stay before or after the villa week is a better structure than attempting it as a day trip.
The drive from LIR airport to La Fortuna (the base town for Arenal) is approximately 2.5 hours, making an Arenal extension before or after the villa stay logistically straightforward.
Monteverde cloud forest
Monteverde is the other major draw that visitors want to combine with a Guanacaste beach stay. The cloud forest is genuinely unlike anything else in Costa Rica: suspended bridges through forest canopy, world-class birdwatching, ziplines through mist, and a temperature 20 degrees cooler than the coast. From Hacienda Pinilla the drive is approximately 3 hours via Route 145. Like Arenal, it is better as an overnight than a long day trip.
For groups with more flexibility, a Monteverde extension on either end of the villa stay makes the cloud forest accessible without the endurance of a very long driving day. The temperature contrast alone, going from 90-degree beach days to cool misty cloud forest, is memorable.
Closer day trips worth considering
Tamarindo and Playa Grande: The town of Tamarindo is 25 minutes and offers restaurants, surf culture, and beach energy that contrasts nicely with the quiet of Hacienda Pinilla. Playa Grande, adjacent to Tamarindo, is a major leatherback sea turtle nesting site and the Las Baulas National Marine Park runs guided night tours during nesting season (October through February).
Playa Conchal and Playa Flamingo: North of Hacienda Pinilla, Conchal is famous for its crushed shell sand and clear water. About 40 minutes by car. Worth half a day for groups who want a swimming beach with a different character from the ones inside the community.
Catamaran excursion from Tamarindo , One of the most popular activities the concierge arranges. A half or full day catamaran from Tamarindo bay with snorkeling stops, wildlife watching, and typically some combination of dolphins, sea turtles, and magnificent Pacific scenery. The group stays together, the logistics are minimal, and it is a different perspective on the coast than anything available from land.
