Complete guide to Hacienda Pinilla: beaches, amenities, and what to know

Hacienda Pinilla is a 4,500-acre private gated community on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste, home to five beaches, a championship golf course, the Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club, the JW Marriott, equestrian facilities, and 45 kilometers of trails. This is the complete guide for guests staying at Casa Bonita Beach.

What Hacienda Pinilla actually is

Hacienda Pinilla is a private, gated resort community covering 4,500 acres on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste, about 3.5 miles south of Tamarindo. It is one of the largest and most established communities in Costa Rica, and it is considerably more than a residential neighborhood. It is closer to a small town with its own beaches, golf course, Beach Club, restaurants, market, equestrian center, tennis courts, mountain biking trails, spa, and the JW Marriott hotel.

To understand what a week at Casa Bonita Beach feels like, you need to understand what Hacienda Pinilla makes possible around it. Hacienda Pinilla's official site gives the overview. This guide gives you the practical picture from a guest's perspective.

The beaches

Hacienda Pinilla has access to five distinct beach areas. Each has a different character.

Playa Avellanas is the most famous, home to the Beach Club and a world-class surf break known as "Little Hawaii," consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in Central America. The beach is wide, the sand is golden, and the surf at the right time of year is serious. The Beach Club sits at the north end with an infinity pool, restaurant, spa treatment rooms, fitness center, and tiki bar. Entry is approximately $10 per person.

Playa Mansita is where the JW Marriott sits. It has a roped swimming area in the ocean, making it the best beach in the community for casual open-water swimming. The JW Marriott's pool is accessible via day pass and is the largest in Central America.

Playa Langosta has dramatic rock formations, reliable surf, and a more secluded feel. It is excellent for long walks and photography.

Playa Bonita (Las Golondrinas area) is the beach closest to Casa Bonita Beach, five minutes on foot. Rocky coastline, extraordinary tide pools, and at low tide a natural snorkel lagoon where guests have seen lobsters, sea turtles, and parrotfish. Not a swimming beach. An exceptional beach for everything else. Read the full guide to Playa Bonita at low tide.

The Golf Course

The Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course is a par-72 championship layout designed by Mike Young, playing up to 7,200 yards through tropical forest with Pacific Ocean views on several holes. It is Audubon Society certified, reflecting the community's commitment to ecological balance. The course is widely considered one of the finest in Central America. Tee times can be booked directly at golf@haciendapinilla.com.

Getting around inside the community

The community spans 4,500 acres. You cannot walk everywhere in the heat and a rental car does not make sense on the quiet internal roads. A golf cart is the right answer for daily life inside Hacienda Pinilla. From Casa Bonita Beach the cart gets you to Playa Bonita in 2 minutes, the Beach Club in 5, the market in 8, and the JW Marriott in about 10. The concierge can have one waiting at the villa on arrival day. Full guide: golf carts at Hacienda Pinilla.
