Hacienda Pinilla is a 4,500-acre private gated community on the northern Pacific coast of Guanacaste, about 25 minutes from Liberia International Airport. It sits between Tamarindo and the quieter beaches to the south, and is home to the JW Marriott, an Audubon-certified golf course, three distinct beaches, and some of the most sought-after villa rentals in Costa Rica. Casa Bonita Beach sits inside Las Golondrinas, the most exclusive neighborhood within the community.
What makes Hacienda Pinilla different
Most beach communities in Costa Rica are either too remote or too crowded. Hacienda Pinilla occupies a rare middle ground. It is private enough to feel genuinely secluded -- 24-hour gated security, no public beach access, almost no traffic -- but connected enough to have everything a group needs within the property or a short drive away.
The landscape feels like a nature reserve as much as a neighborhood. Tropical dry forest covers much of the property, howler monkeys move through the canopy, and the roads are shared with iguanas and the occasional deer. Guests consistently describe it as feeling like a private jungle resort.

The beaches
Playa Bonita
The closest beach to Casa Bonita Beach -- about a five-minute walk through the neighborhood. It is private and accessible only to community residents and guests, so it is never crowded. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, which makes it excellent for tide pool exploring, snorkeling, and sunset watching. At low tide it forms a natural lagoon where guests consistently report seeing lobsters, colorful fish, and sea turtles. One of the most underrated beaches in Guanacaste. Not ideal for traditional swimming but magical for everything else.
Playa Langosta
A longer, more open beach at the southern edge of Hacienda Pinilla. Better for surfing and swimming. Popular for morning walks and sunset sessions. A short drive or longer walk from the villa.
Playa Avellanas
Just outside the Hacienda Pinilla gates to the south. Famous for excellent surf and the iconic beachside restaurant Lola's, where a pot-bellied pig wanders the beach. A local legend and very much worth a visit for lunch or sunset drinks.

Golf
The Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course is a par 72 design by architect Mike Young. It runs along the Pacific coast and is certified by the Audubon Society, meaning it was designed with minimal impact on the surrounding wildlife habitat. The back nine has several holes with ocean views. It plays up to 7,200 yards and is challenging enough for serious golfers while still enjoyable for recreational players. Tee times can be arranged through your concierge at Casa Bonita Beach.
Beach Club
The Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club has an infinity pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant serving everything from casual lunches to full dinners. It is about a 5-minute golf cart ride from Casa Bonita Beach and costs approximately $5 per person for day access. Worth visiting at least once, particularly for the infinity pool and sunset views. Your concierge can arrange access and reservations.
Tennis and pickleball
Courts are available at Hacienda Pinilla and at the adjacent JW Marriott. Equipment rental is available. Groups often set up informal tournaments over the course of a week -- the courts get a lot of use from Casa Bonita guests.
Hiking and biking
The community has trails through the forest and along the coast. A bike is the best way to explore quietly -- howler monkey sightings are common in the early morning when things are still. The community also has a pond area with birdlife that is worth seeking out.
Sunsets at Hacienda Pinilla are a nightly event. The western exposure and flat Pacific horizon make for spectacular evening skies.
The JW Marriott next door
The JW Marriott Guanacaste sits at the northern edge of Hacienda Pinilla and is accessible by golf cart or a short drive. Guests staying at Casa Bonita Beach can access the spa, restaurants, bars, and tennis courts as day visitors. At low tide it is possible to walk along the beach from Playa Bonita all the way to the JW Marriott -- a beautiful 20-minute stroll that guests mention as one of their favourite walks of the trip. The spa is excellent for groups -- several guests have arranged group massage sessions through the concierge.
Getting around Hacienda Pinilla
A golf cart is the best way to get around the community for daily activities -- the beach club, beaches, golf course, and the small community market are all within easy golf cart range. Your concierge can arrange rental. For anything outside the gates -- grocery shopping, Tamarindo, day trips -- a rental car is essential. The nearest supermarket is about 20 minutes away. The standard advice for first-time visitors is to stop at the Walmart near Liberia Airport on the way in and stock up before arriving.
Practical tips for Hacienda Pinilla
- Liberia Airport (LIR) is 25 minutes away -- the closest major airport
- Stock up on groceries at Walmart near LIR on the way in. The community market has limited selection.
- Rent a golf cart for getting around the community. A car is also needed for anything outside the gates.
- External visitors (tour operators, chefs, delivery) need a gate access code arranged in advance through your concierge
- Uber does not reliably operate inside the Hacienda Pinilla gates
- Tamarindo is 20 to 30 minutes by car and has excellent restaurants, surf shops, and nightlife
- Howler monkeys are loudest in the early morning -- the sound carries across the whole community
Wildlife and sustainability
Hacienda Pinilla takes conservation seriously. The Audubon Society certification of the golf course is one example -- the course was designed around existing wildlife corridors rather than clearing them. Howler monkeys are a constant presence throughout the community, and guests at Casa Bonita Beach commonly see iguanas, macaws, and various species of birds from the villa's own backyard. Deer have been spotted on the roads in the early morning.
The region is part of the wider dry tropical forest ecosystem of Guanacaste, which is one of the most biodiverse and best-preserved coastal ecosystems in Central America. During turtle nesting season (typically July through November), guided night walks to see leatherback and olive ridley turtles nesting at nearby beaches are available through local tour operators -- your concierge can arrange.
